2019 – Camelback Road Reconstruction 43rd Avenue – Loop 101
The City of Glendale began its Camelback Road Reconstruction project in 2019 to improve Camelback Road in three segments: Segment 1: 43rd Avenue to 51st Avenue, Segment 2: 91st Avenue to Loop 101, and Segment 3: 83rd Avenue to 91st Avenue.
The overall project scope included urban arterial waterline replacements, a conduit for the future installation of a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) and improvements to existing sidewalks, medians, and asphalt surface. Work included new sidewalks and ADA-compliant ramp improvements to existing sidewalks, new driveways, and new asphalt roadway and asphalt overlay in the intersections to improve travel conditions.
YPMO provided outreach to impacted businesses and schools in the area by preparing and distributing construction postcard mailers, maintaining a project hotline, and conducting business outreach to inform businesses of construction schedules, closures, and detours. The impact to businesses was significant, especially those that had one driveway, and reduced lanes and open trenches made tight turns extremely difficult. By being proactive with outreach, YPMO was able to give business owners time to prepare for these impacts.
Each segment had its own contractor: Combs Construction (Segment 1), Visus, Inc. (Segment 2), and SWB Paving (Segment 3) and we worked closely with all three, as well as the city, to ensure we were providing the most up-to-date and accurate information to the public.
When the project became impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, YPMO shifted our outreach methods from traditional outreach to digital communication via email and phone calls to notify businesses and schools of construction updates. In addition, YPMO utilized paid targeted social ads on Google and Facebook to reach those who were traveling toward and in the project area. We successfully reached 16,000 more people by adding this method of outreach to the project.
This project faced many challenges and setbacks but was ultimately completed in summer of 2021. We were happy to be part of the City of Glendale’s team and have continued to assist the city with outreach on various street maintenance and landscape improvements projects since!
