PEDESTRIAN ACTIVATED SIGNALS | HAWKS | CROSSWALKS
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department selected YPMO to provide public outreach services for the FY2020 Federal Tap HAWK Installation project at six intersections throughout Phoenix: 13th Avenue and Osborn Road, Thomas Road and Dayton Street, Peoria Avenue and 17th Avenue, Colter Street and 7th Avenue, Buckeye Road and 16th Avenue, and Virginia Avenue and 16th Street. The purpose of the project was to install a pedestrian-activated crossing signal also known as a High intensity Activated CrossWalK (HAWK) to increase safety and accessibility for people crossing the intersection on-foot.
YPMO reviewed the design plans and prepared construction notices with graphics that were clear and bullet points that described how the HAWKs would work for pedestrians and drivers alike. We finalized the notices with the City, and mailed to residences in December 2023. Our team hand delivered the notices and discussed the work with the businesses at each intersection.
While construction was originally anticipated to conclude in May 2024, the work was extended due to material delays. YPMO prepared construction updates and re-notified the residences and businesses that work would continue through August 2024. YPMO also prepared and finalized activation notices that describe how to operate the newly activated HAWK. These activation notices were made to be hand-distributed to the area residences and businesses within a half-mile of the newly activated HAWK.
